Your Library: Support Your Library

Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library

The Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library is a non-profit organization that encourages public use and enjoyment of library services and facilities.   Friends are community members who believe that a good library is essential to the cultural, recreational and economic well being of our community.

Exciting things happen when Friends work together.  The members of Friends focus public attention on library needs and work to support the programs and services of the Spruce Grove Public Library through fundraising, promotion and volunteering of personal and professional services.

What do friends of the library do?  Friends may volunteer as much time as they are willing to, and choose from many different types of activities to support the Library.  Examples are:

  • Become a member of the Society’s Board.  Positions available are:   President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.
  • Attend meetings of the Society
  • Provide ideas for fund raising strategies, e.g. sponsorship campaigns, special events, grant applications, grassroots fund raising, etc.
  • Provide ideas for library promotion, e.g. speaking at other organizations’ meetings, producing a newsletter, etc.
  • Plan & organize special events
  • Communicate with the media, e.g. news releases, articles, invitations.
  • Do presentations in the community, and meet with community leaders

Volunteer

"I love libraries and always wanted to work in one. Can I volunteer to work in the library?"

This is our most frequently asked question. Spruce Grove Public Library does not use volunteers to do work that is performed by staff. However, there are excellent volunteer opportunities at Spruce Grove Public Library. Our volunteers fill a very important role in enhancing and complementing library service through their donation of time. The Library has two completely separate streams of volunteers, Friends of the Library and Volunteers that perform duties within the daily routine at the Library. Pick up an application form at the Library or download it now. If you have any questions please contact the Library at 962-4423 or library@sprucegrovelibrary.org

Donate Books and Other Materials

Making a donation

Spruce Grove Public Library does not have the staff or vehicle resources to pick up donations from individuals. Donations intended for the collection and/or the book sales may be brought to the Spruce Grove Public Library.

Evaluation of Donations

Upon request, materials given to be evaluated for the collections of the Library will be evaluated for income tax purposes on the basis of their value to Spruce Grove Public Library and in accordance with the procedures for their evaluation. Evaluation is done by staff working in the area in which the donated material would potentially be housed. E.g. The Audio Visual department will evaluate video donations, Adult Books will be evaluated by the Collection Development Librarian, and Children’s materials will be evaluated by the Children’s materials supervisor, etc. Donations are evaluated using discounted rates for the items the Library wishes to add to the collection. The Library issues tax receipts only for donations $10 and over.
